Bold Beginnings
Join us for an opening night that sets the tone for an unforgettable season – bold, expressive, and full of life.
The program begins with Finlandia by Jean Sibelius – a powerful, stirring journey of national pride and defiance. Next, Ethel Smyth’s Concerto for Violin, Horn and Orchestra offers a rare and compelling centerpiece, featuring violinist Terrie Baune and hornist Melissa Robinson in an unforgettable musical conversation between two virtuoso soloists.
The evening closes with Beethoven’s Symphony No. 2. Brimming with humor, vitality and invention, this symphony captures Beethoven emerging greatness – playful, daring and unmistakably original.
A Season of Light
A luminous celebration of warmth, tradition and musical joy.
Victor Hely-Hutchison’s Carol Symphony is a delightful tapestry of familiar carols, elegantly woven into a symphonic setting.
After intermission the spotlight belongs to the incomparable Claire Bent. She brings her signature versatility to a beautifully crafted Hanukkah medley and a set of holiday favorites, reimagined with charm, soul, groove and sophistication.
All American Celebration
An evening devoted to the unmistakable and brilliant voice of American music.
We begin with the bright forward driving energy of Aaron Copeland’s Outdoor Overture, bursting into life with Copland’s trademark clarity and optimism. That spirit continues into his Music for Movies where the sound world expands into something reflective and nostalgic.
After intermission, we arrive at one of the great landmarks of American opera: George Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess, presented in concert form. Bringing this world to life are two exceptional Bay Area artists, soprano Shawnette Sulker and baritone Bradley Kynard, with the Eureka Symphony Chorus. Together they inhabit Gershwin’s world with warmth, fire and the kind of immediacy that will put you right on Catfish Row.
Rhythm and Romance
Prepare yourself for an evening of dynamic musical delights starting with the vibrant Danzon No. 2 by Arturo Marquez. Inspired by traditional Cuban dance rhythms, elegant one moment and smoldering the next, you’ll find it quite impossible to sit still.
Next we pivot into the luminous clarity of Franz Schubert’s Symphony No.5. Full of youthful exuberance, it is a masterpiece of melodic craftsmanship and emotional depth.
Following intermission, prepare to be dazzled by Edouard Lalo’s captivating Symphonie Espagnole. A sensational piece featuring the extraordinary talent of acclaimed violinist and hometown hero Otis Harriel, this work is less a “symphony” than a full-on showcase of virtuosity. This is a musical journey brimming with passion and energy you won’t want to miss.
In conjunction with this concert, we present our annual Schools to Symphony program. Committed to high quality music education in Humboldt County, the Eureka Symphony and the Humboldt Office of Education bring approximately 1300 students to share the excitement of live symphonic music in the Arkley Center.
Masterworks and Majesty
Compelling performances and timeless musical narratives create a powerful close to the season.
The night begins with Mozart’s Symphony No. 40, known for its elegant flowing melodies and bold harmonies. It is quintessential Mozart showcasing his genius in creating dramatic tension and exquisite beauty.
Our attention then turns to the grandeur of Johannes Brahms’ Piano Concerto No. 2 featuring the phenomenal Ryan MacEvoy-McCullough. Always a local sensation and now a celebrated pianist based in New York, MacEvoy-McCullough is praised for his breathtaking virtuosity and profound musical insight.
This concert is a journey through contrasting musical worlds. Experience the beauty of sound as it transforms into a vibrant celebration of the classical repertoire.
