Contrast and Transformation
Join us for an unforgettable evening of drama, imagination and lyricism. The concert opens with Alexander Borodin’s Overture to Prince Igor, a vivid tapestry of Slavic color and sweeping grandeur. Next, Paul Hindemith’s Symphonic Metamorphosis on Themes of Carl Maria von Weber dazzles with bold orchestration, rhythmic vitality, and playful wit. The program culminates in Ludwig van Beethoven’s brilliant Piano Concerto No. 4 in G Major, a masterwork of profound introspection and lyric beauty. The extraordinary artistry of John Chernoff promises to illuminate every nuance of this immortal concerto.

Winter Tales
This season’s holiday concert takes you into a world of warmth and wonder. The enchanting evening features Tchaikovsky’s timeless Nutcracker Suite, the rich and spirited Rhythm of the Lights, A Hanukkah Fantasia by Michael Isaacson, and Howard Blake’s heartwarming The Snowman, brought to life by local theater legend Michael Fields. Perfect for families and music lovers of all ages, this magical concert blends classical elegance with festive storytelling, celebrating the beauty, joy, and traditions of the season in one entrancing performance.

Legends and Spirits
Be swept away by this spell-binding evening of stories in sound, weaving together cultures and legends. The journey begins with Ghost of the White Deer, a powerful bassoon concerto by Chickasaw composer Jerod Impichchaachaaha’ Tate, performed by celebrated bassoonist Rufus Olivier. Native American voices and natural imagery inspired by Chickasaw mythology intertwine to create a hauntingly beautiful soundscape. We venture onward with Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade, the dazzling orchestra suite inspired by the tales of One Thousand and One Nights, where the voice of a storyteller dances through the orchestra in rich, exotic color. From the spirit of the forest to the mystery of the sea, this program invites you into a world of imagination, tradition and transcendent beauty.

Humor, Passion and Power
A concert celebrating the human spirit traverses a wide emotional landscape from the playful to the profound. The orchestra opens with Kabalevsky’s The Comedians Suite, a spirited work full of wit and charm, its theatrical flair guaranteed to bring a smile. The mood turns deeply expressive with Robert Schumann’s Cello Concerto in A Minor, performed by Garrick Woods, whose soulful and sensitive artistry brings Schumann’s poetic voice to life. The evening concludes with the Danish composer Carl Nielsen’s bold and vibrant Symphony No.1 in G Minor, a work brimming with the energy and optimism of one of Scandinavia’s great symphonists. From the whimsical to the deeply heartfelt, this concert offers a rich and rewarding musical journey.
In conjunction with this concert, we present our annual Schools to Symphony program. Committed to high quality music education in Humboldt County, the Eureka Symphony and the Humboldt County Office of Education bring approximately 1300 students to share the excitement of live symphonic music in the Arkley Center.

A Requiem for Humanity
Experience the profound beauty and emotional depth of Johannes Brahms’s Ein Deutsches Requiem (A German Requiem), in an evening of reflection, remembrance and consolation. Brahms composed this luminous masterpiece not as a mass for the dead, but as a balm for the living, with music that speaks to grief, love, and the enduring human spirit. Featuring the radiant soprano Lucy Fitz Gibbon, the splendid Eureka Symphony Chorus, and a baritone soloist to be announced, this performance offers moments of tender intimacy and soaring grandeur. With its heartfelt text drawn from German scripture and its sweeping, deeply human musical language, this requiem stands as one of classical music’s most moving tributes to life, loss and the comfort we find in one another.
